As noted in previous updates, the new requirements for on-label energy labelling and off label ingredient labelling for wine, are due to come into force across the EU on 8 December 2023.
Despite an impending implementation date, a number of uncertainties remain around the measure, which we are working with Wine Australia and our international colleagues to clarify with the EU. Through the World Wine Trade Group (WWTG), we have logged a number of queries with the European wine industry association (CEEV) who are working with the EU on clarifying a number of points.
Australian Grape & Wine has also submitted comments with the Australian Government to raise as part of the World Trade Organisation Technical Barriers to Trade notification (G/TBT/N/EU/952) seeking clarity and greater certainty of the measures before they are implemented. We are also concurrently discussing with our European colleagues opportunities to harmonise, where possible, requirements for nutrition and ingredient labelling, as both countries consider their approaches.
On 30 May 2023, the European Commission “adopted” Document C(2023)3257 which, among other things, sets out regulations concerning the indication of wine ingredients, which has provided some further clarity. Despite this, several questions remain and we are continuing to work with Wine Australia to provide guidance and clarification to the sector on the practical steps to compliance with the pending new regulations.
